This is a great way to decorate a nursery/girls room. I made two of these chalk boards. The other one is much bigger and serves as a kitchen to do & get list board.

These boards are crazy fun and very easy. The Besttoughest” job is getting to Peruse your local thrifty shops and find some of those old, usually very tacky frames that have tons of gorgeous raised and imprinted designs. I spent $1.50 in total for both of my frames.

I had lots of pinks incorporated into my DIY decor wall. So breaking it up with different textures and colors was a must to give it that shabby chic look.

If you want to find a few of these other DIY’ers hanging up before you, They are featured in my DIY ADDICT menu above.

Ok Lets Get too it

Step One.

Separate glass from frame place on top of a surface you can paint on & get Messy!!

Step 2.

Ok so you want to start painting your glass with the Chalk Board Paint first because you need a few coats and you want to let this dry a while (says an hour but I am way to impatient for details such as that!).

Now as far as for my personal experience goes I would squirt the Chalk Board Paint directly on the glass so you are left with a thick blob that you can then spread out with your brush. You want to do it this way because the thicker the coat the smoother the chalk board surface is. I did attempt to apply thin coats onto the glass with a brush but it left it very textured and rough. So I just Slathered that stuff all over the glass and evenly smoothed it out!!!  MUCH Better!! & faster. You wont need nearly as many coats!!!!

Once you let it dry and apply another coat or two, You will let it cure overnight just to be safe! So put it in a safe spot. If your kids are like mine they are weirdly drawn mesmerizingly to anything that is drying and absolutely has a “NEED……TOO………TOUCH!!” mentality. Soooo continue with caution!!!

Add the life into it!!

Step 3.

This is definitely where your pieces will start to come to life. I love these colors, and would use them just by themselves if they fit the decor. I chose to apply a process called antique’ing because I want mine to be Silver BUT you will see these bright colors in the deep relief spots. So it makes it more than a silver frame, it bring a fun whimsy element to it.

Ok so first just pick your base color and paint the whole frame, & most importantly get in those cracks, don’t be to thick with the paint because you don’t want your paint to fill in the details.

I did two coats

Step 4.

Now to apply top coat. Now you aren’t applying this thick at all. You just want to lightly take a dry brush to the paint and lightly go over the top of the frame. Doing this very lightly so you are not fully filling in the deeper part so your bright colors come thru.

I did not use a dry brush, I just took a piece of a rag. Dipped it lightly in the paint and applied with a rubbing/scuffing motion to the top. That ensures you don’t get to carried away by filling in the spots you want to leave.

After you have applied the top coat lightly, you can paint with a brush on the inner seams and outer walls with your solid silver color!!!

Let dry………………. After you let chalk board glass cure, Pop those suckers in your awesome new frame….. BAM!!!!!!

Shabby Chic Delightfulness!!

Shabby Chic!!
Shabby Chic!!

I tried to capture the faint purpleness to the woodwork but wasnt truly able to. In person it is fun and cute & PERFECT for little girl or home decor!!!

Till next time……….
